Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about word count

What is the difference between characters and characters (no spaces)?
Characters include all characters (including spaces, newlines, etc.), while characters (no spaces) only count visible characters. In writing or translation, characters without spaces are usually used for billing.
How is total word count calculated?
Total words = Chinese characters + English words. Each Chinese character counts as one word, English words are counted by space-separated words. This calculation method is suitable for mixed Chinese-English text statistics.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is estimated based on average reading speed: Chinese about 300 characters/minute, English about 200 words/minute. Speaking time is slower: Chinese about 150 characters/minute, English about 120 words/minute. Actual time may vary depending on content complexity.
How are sentences judged?
Sentence count is determined by counting sentence-ending punctuation marks (。!?.!?). Consecutive punctuation marks (like "!?") count as one sentence. If text has no sentence-ending punctuation but has content, it counts as at least one sentence.
Can other languages be counted?
Yes. The tool supports statistics for all Unicode characters. Character count is accurate for all languages, but word count statistics are optimized for Chinese and English. For languages like Japanese and Korean, you can refer to character count. For other languages that use spaces for word separation (like French, German), you can refer to English word count.
